Coir Rope & Turned Wood

This gallery shows two Traditional crafts of the Maldives. Coir ropes used as decorative elements in turned wood vases. Roanu Veshun in Dhievhi means the craft of making rope from the dried husk of coconuts.

“Roanu Veshun” (two words Roanu meaning Coir and Veshun meaning to spin) is a major craft in Maldivian tradition and living. It is a special handicraft mastered by the women of the Nation. It is known to have been in our culture for generations, research shows that the tradition rolls back to before the year 1077.
